Getting ready for your first horseback riding lesson can feel exciting—and maybe a little intimidating. One common question we get is, “What should I wear?” Good news: you don’t need to spend money on fancy riding gear to get started. At SoCal Horse Adventures, we provide helmets for every rider, so don’t worry if you don’t have one yet. Here’s how to dress comfortably and safely for your first lesson using things you probably already have at home.
1. Wear Comfortable, Fitted Pants
You don’t need special riding breeches for your first lesson. Instead, grab a pair of leggings, yoga pants, or even slim-fitting sweatpants. Avoid anything too loose or baggy that might get caught on the saddle or tack. The key is to have pants that won’t pinch or rub your legs while riding.
2. Choose a Fitted Shirt or Layered Tops
Pick a fitted t-shirt or long-sleeve shirt that lets you move freely. Avoid anything too bulky or with long sleeves that could get caught. If it’s cooler outside, you can layer a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt—but nothing too heavy or restrictive. We suggest bright colors with SPF-50 filter to protect you from sun.
3. Closed-Toe Shoes or Boots
Ideally, you want closed-toe shoes with a small heel to keep your feet safe in the stirrups. If you don’t have riding boots, sturdy sneakers or work boots work fine for your first lesson. Avoid sandals, flip-flops, or anything open-toed. Hiking boots work great as long as they are under 5 inches wide.
4. Bring Socks That Cover Your Ankles
Wear socks that go up to or over your ankles to prevent chafing from the stirrup leathers. This helps keep your legs comfortable during your ride.
5. Helmet? Don’t Worry — We’ve Got You Covered
Safety first! At SoCal Horse Adventures, we provide clean, well-maintained helmets for every rider. If you don’t own one yet, no problem at all. We’ll fit you with a helmet to keep your head protected during your lesson.
6. Optional: Gloves and Hair Ties
-
If you have riding gloves, bring them along for a better grip on the reins. If not, don’t stress—it’s not necessary for your first lesson.
-
Tie back long hair with a hairband or clip to keep it out of your face.
Bonus Tips
-
Avoid jewelry that can get tangled or caught.
-
Skip heavy perfumes or lotions that might bother the horse.
-
Drink water before your lesson and bring a bottle if you want to stay hydrated.

You don’t need to spend money on special clothes to enjoy your first riding lesson. With some simple, comfortable clothes you already own and our helmets provided, you’re ready to start your horse riding journey safely and confidently. Just show up, relax, and enjoy the ride!
