For the past few years we have been organizing camping trips with our horses and they have always been a blast. Every time I post an upcoming camping trip on my instagram it gets booked out within hours. These trips typically range from $1,500 to $5,000 per person.

We are putting this trip together exclusively for the club members. I want you guys to experience my favorite thing to do with horses- exploring new, amazing places.

The location

We are going to Montana De Oro State Park. Located just about 3 hours north of LA, near San Luis Obispo. Montana De Oro is a horse riding paradise. It features a beautiful campsite with corrals and running water for horses. And the trails include mountains, canyons, sand dunes, and one of the best beaches I have ever ridden on. What I love about this location, is the central placement of the campsite. There are tens of miles of trails surrounding the campsite. But no matter which trail we take we are always nearby the camp. That makes it safe and easy to go back in case if you got too tired.

The format

There will be three riders per horse. Each rider can expect around 2 hours in the saddle each day, and 6-8 hours total over the course of the weekend. We will do various trails featuring different scenery. We will be taking 6 horses total- 4 for you guys, plus one for me and Landon (for those who haven't met him, he helps me during all those trips). Between the two of us we are able to help you guys have a fun and safe experience. We have taken as many as 19 horses with total beginners on them for rides with the two of us. 4 is easy! You will have a great time.

You guys will be responsible for tacking, untacking, grooming, feeding, watering, and cleaning after your horse. You will get a few days horse ownership experience.

The pace

We will divide into three groups according to your skills and comfort levels. Some of you will surely be ready by then to gallop with us on the beach. For those of you who want to take things slower, we will have at least one group that will go mainly at walking pace. The faster groups will do more miles- obviously. But we will make sure that all of you get to see the most beautiful parts of the park. And all of you will get to ride on the beach- promise.

We will start each day with the more advanced riders to get the horses little tired.  All of our horses are very fit and they can all easily handle 6 hours of riding per day, but by the time the slower riders get on they will be more mellow and relaxed.

The campsite

It is located a few minutes away from town with groceries and restaurants. It has drinking water for horses, a campfire, and a toilet. No showers. I usuallly use those solar showers from Walmart, they work great.

As for the camping accommodations, you can bring an RV, a tent, or sleep in your car. I have some extra tents if you need one.

Bring your chair! There are some wooden benches but I don't think you will want to sit on them all evening if you're sore from riding. I have my own really nice camping chair and I am very protective over it, haha!

FAQ

Can I bring plus one?

The campsite can accommodate 30-40 people. So yes, it's not a problem. If you want to bring your family, that would be ok as well. No charge for them, but please do not ask me if your guests can ride the horses. Only registered participants will be allowed to ride, or even mount.

Can my friend come and ride as well?

Everybody must be a club member at the time when they are reserving their spot on the trip. I am organizing this trip at a fraction of the cost without making any profit to show you guys appreciation and let you have an amazing experience.

Is my deposit refundable?

No, it is not. But it is transferable. So if you end up not being able to make it, we will try to fill your spot with someone else and get your your deposit back.

What is the food situation like?

On most of the past trips everybody took care of their breakfast and lunch and we all put some money together for a few people to go to a store, buy ingredients and cook dinner for everyone at the campsite. We would also sometimes go to town and eat at a restaurant. Entirely up to you guys!

Age restrictions?

None. The trip is open to all club members. We will take a good care of the kids, whether we will pony them on their own horse, or have them ride on one horse with me and Landon- or their parents if they feel comfortable. We will make sure to put the groups together the way that everybody will have a lot of fun, while staying safe.

What else is there to do at the camp?

You can bring your mountain bike, you can go hiking, wind surfing, surfing, play volleyball, go fishing. Make the best out of your trip.

Do we carpool or meet there?

Landon and I will bring the horses over. You guys don't need to make it to the ranch before the trip. Just meet us there.

Is alcohol permitted?

Yes, but not before riding. If you had a beer you’re not riding until the next day!

What to bring?

A few things that are not obvious, if you're not experienced on trails, are a camelpack (that backpack with bladder for water so you can drink without stopping), and a bandana or face mask (it can get dusty if you're riding in the back of the pack). Some obvious ones are insect sprays, lots of water, sun protection and snacks.

What boots do you recommend?

Hiking boots all day long. Leave your riding boots at home. Trails may be flooded, or rocky and we may have to get down and walk a bit sometimes.
